COMMISSION SERVICES

A PIECE OF ART, AN ARTIFACT THAT HOLDS STORY

I make art artifacts with dirt, clay, soil, and found objects from places that mean something. I consider these artifacts as stories made from the terroir of life. I believe every story is worthy of recording, preserving, and telling, and holds the potential for change in the truths it discloses. My commission service is a collaborative effort with a specific purpose as defined by the individual or commercial space. It is my hope that your commissioned piece of art will speak to the past as well as the future and contribute to a shared discourse and common purpose in human society.

The value of telling your story.

Storytelling is a fundamental part of being human. We think in terms of stories and frame the world in terms of story. Telling your story invites the possibility for others to feel emotional connections by recognizing themselves in your experiences. I believe that individually and collectively our stories are part of something enduring and bigger than ourselves. The commonalities we discover when we share our stories encourage empathy and understanding despite our differences, and can become the foundation on which strong families and communities are built.

What does an art artifact look like?

Made primarily from land materials, the art artifacts bear physical properties unique to the place where they are harvested. These materials are preserved in their raw form using a binder that holds them together without altering their character, placed in a format that is honest and true to your story.

What is the commission process?

The commission process is a collaboration between you and me. We begin with your story and where it took place. We discuss the land materials unique to this locality, the intended space the work will reside in, and your personal aesthetic. With this information, I consider what is possible and appropriate from an artistic perspective regarding the art form of the work by asking questions like, What art form would best hold or speak to and perpetuate the telling of this personal story? Would a particular art form be better suited for the space where the artwork will reside? Does the nature of the material lend itself to one art form over another? Does the client have a preference for a particular art form?

Art forms include, but are not limited to, a painting, a book, a small sculpture, or the story as text literally made from the dirt. Other art forms are possible, specific to the needs of the individual or commercial commission.

Next, we will discuss the option to incorporate objects, marks, a symbol, word(s), letter(s), or number(s) of particular importance to the story.

After our collaboration has taken place, a proposal in the form of a contract will be prepared and reviewed together. The contract will describe the work, materials, a detailed plan of action including the logistical collection of land materials, and an outline of the total cost of the commission and fee schedule. Included will be the projected date of completion, checkpoint dates, and any other details unique to the individual or commission project.

ART FORMS

An art form is a means of creative expression. I offer paintings, books, small works, and text be it a literal story, a family name, or imagery as in a symbol, logo, brand name, etc. made from the dirt itself. Other art forms are possible, specific to the needs of the individual or commercial commission.

I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR YOUR STORY AND CREATE A ONE OF A KIND PIECE OF ART FOR YOU.

I WELCOME COLLABORATION AND THE EXPLORATION OF NEW IDEAS AND WORK.
